Lorenzo BINI SMAGHI

Lorenzo Bini Smaghi was appointed Member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank in June 2005. As a professional, he has previously been Director General for International Financial Relations of the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance; Deputy Director General for Research in the European Central Bank in Frankfurt; Head of Policy Division of the European Monetary Institute in Frankfurt; Economist first and then Head of Exchange Rate and International Trade Division in the Research Department of Banca d’Italia. He started his carreer with an Internship at the Central Banking Department of the International Monetary Fund inWashington DC.
He has been also appointed Chairman of Working Party n 3 of the OECD; G7 Finance Deputy; VP of the Economic and Financial Committee of the EU; Chairman of the Sub-Committee on IMF issues of the EFC; Chairman of the Committee on Financial Markets of the OECD; President of SACE SpA, the Italian Export Credit Agency and member of the Boards of EIB; Finmeccanica S.p.A; MTS S.p.A
He studied in Bruxelles, Louvain and California, and has a PhD in Economics by the University of Chicago.
He is also author of several articles and books on international and European monetary and financial issues, including the books: L’Euro, Il Mulino, Bologna, 1998; Open Issues in European Central Banking, Macmillan, London, 2000 (with D. Gros); Chi Ci Salva dalla Prossima Crisi Finanziaria?, Il Mulino, Bologna, 2000.
