Brunello CUCINELLI

Chairman & Ceo, Brunello Cucinelli

Brunello Cucinelli was born on 3 September 1953 in Castel Rigone (Perugia). After receiving his secondary school diploma as a building surveyor in Perugia in 1972, he studied engineering for two years, from 1972 to 1974. At the age of 25, the idea came to him that brightly colored cashmere could be a major innovation. He started his activity by himself in a small 40m2 workshop. In 1985 he purchased, to serve as the future headquarters of his small cashmere business, the crumbling 14th-century castle of Solomeo, a small village abandoned since the 1960s located just outside Perugia, where his girlfriend Federica lived. Restoration work began the same year. In 1987 he moved the company’s headquarters to Solomeo. His dream was to be able to work in a splendid place, with the idea of making people’s work more “human” and increasing its “dignity”, while at the same time “preserving” the assets belonging to the world. It was a philosophy, often a subject of study at major Italian and foreign universities, which brought the enterprise to be known as the “humanist company”. Today the Group, one of the major cashmere producers, occupies one of the top positions of the world’s luxury goods sector. Brunello Cucinelli is President of the Repertory Theatre of Umbria, Vice President of Pitti Immagine, and Member of the Board of Directors of the Altagamma Foundation. He has received numerous prizes and awards over the years, including a degree “Honoris Causa” in Philosophy and Ethics of Human Relations from the University of Perugia and the title of “Cavaliere del Lavoro” from President Napolitano, both in 2010.
