Italo ROTA

Architect, Studio Italo Rota and Partners

Italo Rota was born in 1953 in Milan where he graduated from the city’s Polytechnic. After having won the competitive tender for the indoor areas of the Musée d’Orsay in the late eighties, he moved to Paris where he was responsible (together with Gae Aulenti) for the restoration of the Museum of Modern Art at the Pompidou Centre, the new rooms of the French School at the Cour Carré of the Louvre, the lighting of Notre Dame Cathedral and along the banks of the Seine as well as the renovation of the centre of Nantes.

The Studio of Italo Rota & Partners handles the complexities of major international projects at even the most varied levels of detail, from product designs to the planning of large urban areas, maintaining a systematic focus on a wealth of spaces and shapes. Through the use of innovative materials, state of the art technologies and the extensive research on light, the spaces put forward by the Studio are directed at resolving the problems associated with planning, maintaining an intense complexity that is aimed at arousing a visitor’s emotions. The different stages of a project are managed uninterruptedly, in a fractal logic that retains the richness of the general project right through to its most minute details, transforming objects and buildings into unique works of art, with different ideas for every project.

In addition to his prolific professional commitments, Italo Rota, who is the Scientific Director of NABA and Domus Academy in Milan, also maintains an intensive theoretic programme with the publication of books, articles for magazine and newspapers, conferences and university lectures.

Italo Rota is the recipient of numerous awards such as the Gold Medal for Italian Architecture for public spaces, the Gold Medal for Italian Architecture for culture and leisure time, New York’s Landmark Conservancy Prize and the Grand Prix de l’Urbanisme in Paris.
