Head of Investment Banking Italy, Bank of America Merrill Lynch

Diego is Head of Investment Banking in Italy at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Formerly he was responsible for the firm’s Equity Capital Markets activities in Italy and Central Eastern Europe.

Diego has been in Bank of America Merrill Lynch since 1996, spending many years in the London and Singapore offices before moving to Milan where he is currently based.

Over the years, Diego has developed a unique experience in leading capital raisings and other financing assignments by Italian issuers, working on over 50 completed assignments for total capital raised in excess of Eur 60 billion.

In the financial institutions sector, Diego acted as advisor in many of the most relevant recapitalisations since the beginning of the financial crisis, including the rights issues for UniCredit (I, II and III), Intesa Sanpaolo, Monte dei Paschi, Banco Popolare, PKO Bank Polski.

In large industrial and regulated sectors, main assignments include: for Eni Group, the recent Snam Refinancing and the Snam Rete Gas capital increase; for Enel, the IPO, the subsequent sell downs and the rights issue and the IPO of Enel Green Power; Enersis rights issue; for Finmeccanica, the zero coupon exchangeable, several bond issues and rating advisory mandate; Hera convertible, Tauron Polska IPO.

Diego has also a unique experience in the Italian practice for IPOs and mid cap equity raisings, having led over the last few years the origination and execution of many notable assignments, many of which were financial sponsor exits.

Most relevant IPOs include: Brunello Cucinelli, Enel GreenPower, Aeffe, Damiani, Il Sole24 Ore, Poltrona Frau, Polynt, Nice, Sàfilo, MARR, Geox, Azimut, Tecla Real Estate Fund, Juventus FC and Tod's.

Other equity transactions include: Autogrill Spin-off of World Duty Free, Beni Stabili AGT and convertible combo, Prysmian AGT, MARR AGT, Telecom Italia Media rights issues; STM Zero Coupon Convertible, Alitalia Capital Increase and Convertible Bond.

Diego has also worked on several notable M&A assignments, including: Carlyle sale of a controlling stake in Moncler to Eurazeo; Clessidra sale of a controlling stake in Sisal to Apax and Permira, Merrill Lynch Private Equity acquisition of Necta Vending; Permira sale of Ferretti Yatchs to Candovere, Vestar Capital Partners Acquisition of FL Selenia from Doughty Hanson, Fiat sale of 34% Stake in Ferrari to Mediobanca, divestiture of Eni Real Estate Portfolio to Whitehall.

Diego has a Degree in Economics (cum laude) from Bocconi University and has also participated to the International Management Programme by Stern Business School in New York.

Diego is a frequent lecturer at Bocconi in Graduate and Undergraduate finance classes and currently attending as BofAML representative as a Member of the Bocconi Committee for Development.
